TPG Architecture's 'Office as Stadium' for Major League Soccer Headquarters: A Fusion of Sports and Work
The Major League Soccer (MLS) headquarters in New York City, designed by TPG Architecture, is a unique and innovative workspace that draws inspiration from the world of sports, specifically soccer. The office, which opened earlier this year, coincides with the 30th anniversary of the MLS and the growing cultural impact of football in North America.
What makes this project particularly fascinating is the studio's approach to creating a workspace that mirrors the dynamics of a soccer pitch. The 'office as a stadium' concept emerged from feedback gathered from current and former players, coaches, retired athletes, and long-standing employees, aiming to create a space that reflects the energy and excitement of the sport.
One of the key features is the entrance area, which resembles the tunnel players run through to enter the field. The custom mesh weave cladding the elevator bay, resembling goalie net, sets the tone for the entire space. LED lighting and screens behind the walls and ceiling can be programmed to display branding, creating a dynamic and immersive environment.
The reception area further enhances the soccer theme with a double-height lobby centred around a grand staircase. A wall of jerseys and the Championship Cup on display add to the sports-centric atmosphere. The Midfield, a central gathering space, includes meditation and wellness rooms, coffee bars, and a cafe, providing employees with areas to relax and interact.
The staircase itself is lined with a digital LED banner, flashing players and branding, and representing different tiers of a stadium. The bottom level features a 'dugout-style' IT technical corner, drawing inspiration from the technical area of a stadium where coaches gather. Conference and meeting rooms are designed with screens and grey carpeting, while bold 'grass green' and cobalt 'MLS-blue' tones add a touch of colour to the furniture and accents.
Employee working floors are lined with patterned carpet and desk units, creating a vibrant and engaging environment. The studio incorporated a diagonal slash motif throughout the project, inspired by the MLS shield logo, adding a subtle yet powerful design element.
TPG Architecture's work on the MLS headquarters showcases their ability to blend sports aesthetics with a functional workspace. The office as a stadium concept not only creates a unique and memorable environment but also reflects the growing influence of football in North America. It raises a deeper question about the potential for sports-inspired design in other corporate settings, offering a fresh and engaging approach to workplace architecture.
In my opinion, this project is a testament to the power of design in creating spaces that inspire and engage. It challenges the traditional office environment and opens up new possibilities for how we experience and interact with our workplaces. As we continue to seek innovative solutions to modern challenges, the fusion of sports and work, as seen in the MLS headquarters, offers a fascinating and thought-provoking perspective.
